Qualifications

Summary of the position:

The skilled and dedicated Street Responder with Advanced Medical Emergency Technician (AEMT) certification will join our Homeless Street Medicine Program in Las Vegas. This vital role will be responsible for addressing acute and emergent medical needs of individuals living on the streets and in encampments, particularly those within the Corridor of Hope and its surroundings. The Street Responder (AEMT) will work a full-time schedule to provide essential medical care, emergency procedures, and referrals within the homeless community. The ideal candidate will possess strong emergency medical skills, geographic knowledge of the area, and the ability to work effectively with homeless patients and community partners.

 

Requirement of the Position:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and protocols.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the geographic area around the Corridor of Hope and Las Vegas.
  • Strong diagnostic abilities to assess medical conditions accurately.
  • Ability to operate the emergency cart and related medical equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when dealing with homeless individuals.
  • Physical ability to lift substantial weight and work in diverse environments.
  • Proficiency in collaborating with community partners and local healthcare facilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the existing Healthcare for the Homeless program.
  • Experience with electronic health record documentation, preferably Nevada Health Centers' system.

General Duties:

  • Respond promptly to acute and emergent medical needs within the homeless community around the Corridor of Hope in Las Vegas.
  • Assess and call the Emergency Medical Service with appropriate in accordance with established protocols and standards.
  • Possess an in-depth understanding of the geographic area surrounding the Corridor of Hope, ensuring efficient navigation to reach individuals in need.
  • Utilize diagnostic skills to assess conditions and provide appropriate medical care to homeless individuals.
  • Operate/audit the supply cart, ensuring all medical equipment is well-maintained and functioning.
  • Collaborate with patients in shelters and on the streets, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy towards their unique circumstances.
  • Street Responder will travel to shelters, or encampments where homeless persons congregate, to conduct intake screening to determine those in need to medical services.
  • Provider health care services at the time of engagement.
  • Lift substantial weight as necessary to provide care to patients in various environments.
  • Foster effective working relationships with community partners, including shelters, local healthcare facilities, and social service organizations.
  • Collaborate with the existing Healthcare for the Homeless program to refer patients for primary care visits and necessary treatments.
  • Accurately document patient interactions and care provided in Nevada Health Centers electronic health record.
